Bill the Burger Man

Explorers are not your typical lot and neither are their reasons to travel the state! Bill Bunyan, Explorer #1033 from Dodge City, decided to eat a hamburger in every county! His inspiration was Larry Woydziak, Explorer #1020 from Lawrence, who bowled in every county (that had a bowling alley). There's something about being an Explorer that makes you feel like doing crazy things.

In June of 2000 Bill started his quest. An active KU alum with football and basketball season tickets, Bill and his wife Susan had ready-made reasons to travel across the state. But the hamburger goal helped Bill travel to all 105 counties in the state.

On August 21, 2003 over fifty of Bill's friends and family, as well as fellow Explorers, gathered at Paddy's in Sterling (Rice County) to help Bill eat his 105th burger.

Bill had adventures and memories that will last a lifetime. He met people along the way that became friends and went with him to eat some of his burgers.

Local newspapers came out to meet Bill and write about his quest. His wife spent money in shops in the "burger towns" -- and felt good about it!

Bill was a terrific Kansas Explorer Club ambassador and spread the word everywhere he went!

Congratulations, Bill, on eating a hamburger in every county AND for exploring every county in Kansas!
