Big Kansas Road Trip Pop Up Coming to Sheridan County

Sheridan County will play host to the Kansas Sampler Foundation’s third Big Kansas Road Trip Pop Up of the year on Saturday, October 4. The public is invited.

A project of the non-profit Kansas Sampler Foundation, the purpose of the Pop Up event is to provide the public firsthand experiences in rural communities and to give small towns a chance to showcase who they are and what they have.  Events and activities are scheduled throughout the day to help people get to know the history and current story of the communities in Sheridan County.

The event will kick off at 10 a.m. in front of the courthouse in Hoxie where the staff of the Kansas Sampler Foundation will greet people and start the day with The Stump game. People are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.  The theme for the Pop Up is Sing-along in Sheridan County and the first sing-along will happen at The Stump.

Two more sing-alongs will happen throughout the day.  Led by local musicians, participants of the Pop Up are invited to join in with some familiar songs. A song book will be available. The other sing-alongs will be at the BottleKAP Studio in Hoxie at 1 p.m. for show tunes and at the Cottonwood Ranch state historic site at 5 p.m. for pop, country, and Kansas songs. The Hoxie Scouts will be serving chili and cornbread at Cottonwood Ranch.

The jail and museum will be open in Hoxie as will the churches in Seguin and Angelus. Foote Cattle Feeders will offer two tours of the feedlot, giving visitors a behind the scenes look at this unique operation. In Selden, people can shop at the grocery store and lumberyard and buy cookies at the walking trail in Selden.

KSF PowerUp & Engagement Manager Simone Elder said, “This day is like a giant open house for these communities. Not only will it help the public see Sheridan County with new eyes but locals may see themselves differently, too. It’s a fun, easy day of experiencing rural culture in one spot on the Kansas map with the added twist of singing as you explore.”

Papa Baldy’s, a popcorn company, in McPherson County is the Pop Up sponsor.  In early May, KSF held their first Pop Up of the year in Morton County and in early September Halstead hosted a Pop Up. The core audience of these Pop Ups are members of the Kansas Explorers Club but the public is invited. People attend from across the state.
